Houston we have so many problems…

Curtis “Launchpad” Larkin’s career as an astronaut has had its share of ups and downs.

Alternately lauded as the single-handed savior of NASA and condemned as a reckless, hot-headed bully, Curt has been through the wringer of public opinion and come out on top. When he embarks on his final mission with NASA, Curt figures there’s no curveball that life has left to throw him.

But when the role of spacecraft communicator is passed to a young engineer back in Houston who he’s never met, Curt’s mission takes on a new trajectory.

“CAPCOM to commander. Do you read?”

Patrick Harte’s life is turned upside down when he’s called to fill in at mission control, working directly under his hero, Curtis Larkin.

Falling for Curt is just a small step for Patrick — but it’s one giant leap to think that the astronaut could ever return his feelings.

“The more I talk to you, the more I know that we understand each other.”

After Curt connects with Patrick from worlds away, he can’t imagine life on earth without the other man… Despite the fact that he’s never laid eyes on Patrick. And their problems won’t stop once he’s cleared for landing.

The bad-boy astronaut is no stranger to controversy — but will the genuine and soft-spoken man of his dreams be able to keep up with the trouble Curt seems to stir everywhere he goes?

(One Giant Leap is a slow burn m/m contemporary romance novel with a May-December theme and a happily-ever-after ending — plus an explicit bonus chapter for newsletter subscribers. Book contains a 10,000-word standalone bonus story, The Duet.)

It all too rare to find a book worthy of 5 stars. Reading this felt like watching a movie. I enjoyed all of the characters in this book, not just the main characters. There was plenty of interaction with the rest of the Hermes I crew and then mission control on the ground at NASA. Curt and Patrick were so real, I experienced their developing romance with them and it was a rush! I borrowed this book with Kindle Unlimited, but purchased my own copy before finishing it. This book will join a small list of others that I look forward to revisiting. I'll have to check out more from this author! Thanks for making my day so enjoyable. :D

4.5 stars

I am SO close to giving this five stars. I've always been a big fan of attraction across distance (and there is definitely distance in this one!), where attraction happens based on personalities and not lust.

Patrick has a great personality that makes him likeable to other characters and to the reader, and he quickly wins over us all when he becomes CAPCOM (can I just add that I love the abbreviated titles/nicknames they use to refer to each other?)

Curt calls himself a bastard, but he is far from. He has a little bit of bite that is mainly expressed in snark and sarcasm - another favorite of mine - and Patrick responds to it so well.

My only concern was the writing style. It is written in the present tense, which you get used to after a while. But. The way the background story/flashbacks are written were unnecessarily complicated to read because they are written like transcripts of interviews, and that pulled me a little out of the story to comprehend that.

“He made me use my mad voice, Laxmi,” Perez says. All of the anger and authority has drained from his tone. “Is he going to keep doing that? I don’t like doing that.”

“Oh my God. Please tell me you took notes. Please tell me I’m hearing the sound of cheeseburger notes.”
I really liked this book. It has a plot I haven't encountered in ANY other book (though it did remind me just a little of The Ship Who Sang by Anne McCaffrey which is one of my favs by her - so, total compliment). Anyway, sexytimes don't happen until the end, but the plot development was so good, I didn't mind. I liked all the supporting characters and they seemed realistic. The text account of the TV news interview program threw me for a loop at first. Such an awkward style and it kept popping up. But I started to warm to it and then I figured out WHY the information was being given to us in that way, it made more sense. I thought the crowdfunding plot point was creative and yet very realistic. It felt a teeeeny bit like instalove to me (two weeks?), but, eh, I'll overlook it.

Oh, the prologue was a bad way to start (and, by definition, NOT a prologue). I'm going to assume, unless there's a warning or it sounds like a high angst plot, that a romance book is going to have a HEA. But I want to make that journey WITH the characters. I don't want it thrust in my face right away like I don't understand I'm reading a ROMANCE. There was absolutely no need to start the book with that style of "prologue." But it's only a few pages. Or just skip it, as another reviewer recommends.
So, this is the third book by Kay that I have read on . Again, I am impressed with her writing, character development, and story telling.

This book is similar to her other two in the above mentioned - I have come to expect Kay to offer good writing, real characters you can/want to invest in, and a good story. With this book, she did not disappoint.

I like both the main characters, Kurt and Patrick, who are flawed in their own ways. I also like the third MC, space/Hermes space mission. Was an interesting way to create and see a lovestory unfold. Strong secondary characters as well. We get a glimpse of Patrick's history/struggles, but not much in terms of Curt's background (other than what we are told).

I wish it was longer - explored more after the space mission. The beginning does jump between "real time" and a previous (but related) TV interview. So, I had to adjust for that. However, I would strongly recommend this author and this book to anyone that enjoys the tier of M/M romance where it is not just crummy dialogue and overzealous sex, but a good story with realistic characters.
